With various phone and tablet manufacturers customizing their USB drivers, and sometimes even the Android operating system, examiners may have to take extra steps in order to successfully acquire data from a particular Android device.

Troubleshooting Tips

If the analysis system running Mobilyze/BlackLight does not recognize an Android device, consider the following:

  • Check the USB cable connection between the Android device and the computer. Try disconnecting and reconnecting at both ports to ensure the cable is secure. It is recommended to connect the device directly to the computer without using a USB hub.
  • Use the manufacturer's USB cable for the Android device. Doing so may make a difference! Many generic USB cables will not work with certain Android devices.
  • Make sure the Android device is unlocked, and that the USB debugging mode has been selected from the Developer options (or, on some devices, Development) in the device's Settings menu. The USB debugging option may have to be selected and unselected a few times on some Android devices. Note: Newer Android devices may have the Developer option hidden. Go to Settings, select About phone, and tap Build number seven (7) times. Then return to the Settings menu, Select the unhidden Developer options (or, Development,) and choose Android debugging. (The exact wording for these settings may vary slightly from one device to another.)
  • Most devices cannot be detected by Mobilyze/BlackLight if the “charge only” option is selected on the device. To change this setting, swipe down from the top of the device screen (while the device is attached) and choose USB computer connection, or Charge Only if the device is currently in the "charge only" mode. (The exact wording of options will vary from one device to another.) From here, change the connection setting to either Media device (MTP), Camera (PTP), or Internet mode. While Media device (MTP) is the most common mode, the user may have to try Camera (PTP) or Internet mode for the device to be recognized. Once Mobilyze/BlackLight recognizes the device, and it is in USB debugging mode, the RSA key fingerprint prompt displays on the device. Select the checkbox to Always allow from this computer and tap OK.
  • The Android device may auto-lock, and it is important to keep the device awake during the collection. Go to the device's Settings menu and turn off auto-lock, or change the amount of time before auto-lock occurs.
  • If adding an Android device that is "rooted," ensure that the device's developer option for Root Access is set to Apps and ADB prior to beginning the collection. If this Root Access option is set to Apps Only, Mobilyze/BlackLight may not be able to properly interact with the device.


Drivers for Windows Users

  • For some Android devices, an additional driver must be installed in order to allow communication between the device and the Windows computer running Mobilyze/BlackLight. This driver is usually referred to as an ADB driver, though manufacturers may refer to it as either an ADB or a USB driver. Many of the common manufacturer ADB drivers are included in the install package of Mobilyze (from 2015 R1) and BlackLight (from 2015 R2).
  • When connected to a Windows computer, many Android devices will prompt the computer's Device Manager to download the USB driver for that particular device. The Device Manager must be allowed to finish before Mobilyze can recognize the connection. (Some Android devices require that an SD card be present in the device in order to download the USB driver. The SD card does not have to be the original card.)
  • There are certain Android devices that require manual user interaction through Windows' Device Manager in order to install drivers properly. For example, the Google Nexus 5 requires these additional steps:

    To install the Android USB driver on Windows for the first time:

    1. Connect an Android-powered device to the computer's USB port.
    2. (For Windows 7) Click on the Start menu and enter 'Device Manager' in the search box to find and open it; or, (for Windows 8) go to the Start menu screen, select the Search icon (top right corner) and enter 'Device Manager' in the search box to find and open it.
    3. In Device Manager, select Other devices.
    4. Right-click the device name (such as 'Nexus 5') and select Update Driver Software. This launches the Hardware Update Wizard.
    5. Select Browse my computer for driver software and choose Next.
    6. Select Browse and locate the USB driver folder. (The Google USB Driver is located in C:\Program Files (x86)\BlackBag\BlackBag Driver Pack\Android).
    7. Choose Next to install the driver.

Model-specific issue: LG E980 (Optimus G Pro)

If this device model has Wi-Fi enabled, it tries to force ADB to connect over Wi-Fi instead of the USB cable. Disable Wi-Fi on the device and reconnect it to the computer. Windows will prompt to install an extra driver for the LG_PC_Program.exe software. Once the LG driver is installed, and the device is in USB debugging mode, the device should show as available for collection.


Model-specific issue: LG G3, LG G Stylo, LG MS345, LG VK700, and LG VS415PP (Optimus Zone 2)*

A specific USB driver may need to be installed on analysis machines running either Windows or Mac operating systems. The USB driver is identical for these models. The driver can be downloaded from the following link:

Some Samsung models require a sub-menu to be revealed in order to enable MTP mode. To reveal the sub-menu, dial #*0808# on the device. Then select on MTP + ADB which will enable MTP and make the USB debugging box selectable.

Model-specific issue: SM-S820L (Samsung Galaxy Core Prime)

This device does not establish an ADB connection on Windows using the Samsung drivers in BlackBag's drivers pack. To get ADB to connect, the examiner must install Samsung Kies on the analysis system:

Verizon

Verizon Ellipsis tablet (manufactured by Quanta Computer) - Verizon does not make the drivers available online, but the drivers are stored on the device itself. To install the drivers, connect the device, swipe down from the top to open the control panel, and change the connection type to CD-ROM. A virtual CD-ROM drive appears on the Windows system. Open the virtual CD-ROM drive to find the Windows drivers for the device.

If the manufacturer website offers the ADB driver compressed in a RAR (.rar) file, it will be necessary to have an application that extracts/unpacks the executable file from the RAR file. There are free apps offered online to extract RAR files.
